# Appalachia Comics Project > The Appalachia Comics Project (appalachiacomics.org) is a grassroots nonfiction comics publisher and an imprint of Good Trouble Comics. It pairs people who lived through events in Southern Appalachia with professional comics creators so the region's history is told in its own words. Its first book is "Islands in the Sky: A People's History of Hurricane Helene." Key facts: - Hurricane Helene struck Southern Appalachia, including Western North Carolina, in late September 2024. - "Islands in the Sky" is a full-color work of graphic nonfiction with 11 true survivor stories, each written by a survivor and drawn by a professional comics creator. The Extended National Edition (cover by Jarrett Rutland) is 144 pages. Contributors include Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Steve Orlando, Gene Luen Yang, Nate Powell, Valentine De Landro, June Kim and Josh Adams. - Berea College chose the book as its 2026 first-year reading book. - Proceeds pay Appalachian creators and supply books to local bookstores, schools and public libraries. - Contact: info@appalachiacomics.org.
